Listening and learning from First Nations people during Pride Month

As part of its commitment towards equity and justice for First Nations peoples, the Department of Indigenous Studies at Macquarie University has produced the country’s first ever Indigenous Queer Studies unit.

The unit’s convenor, Indigenous Early Career Academic Fellow Andrew Farrel, will be exploring some of its themes in Developing and Delivering Indigenous Queer Studies, an online event on Wednesday 24 June organised by the NSW/ACT Higher Education Pride Network as part of Pride Month.

“While generally treated as separate fields of research, Indigenous Studies and Queer Studies share many empirical, political, and theoretical considerations,” explains Andrew.

“This event will explore the need for a better understanding of Indigenous queer identities and the specific challenges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ+ people continue to endure.”

The celebration of Pride Month was inspired by the turning point in LGBTIQ+ rights prompted by the Stonewall riots, which began in June 1969 in New York. For the first time, Macquarie will be joining a program of Pride Month events in collaboration with other Australian universities to commemorate and celebrate LGBTIQ+ rights and milestones and acknowledge the work that is still to be done, as part of the recently created NSW/ACT Higher Education Pride Network.

“The Network was created last year as a collective effort by several universities to foster LGBTIQ+ inclusion in the Higher Education sector by sharing leading practice on policy, processes and systems, learning and teaching, and leadership from our organisations,” says Izzy de Allende, Coordinator of Workplace Diversity and Inclusion at Macquarie and Network member.

“Joining forces for events such as Pride Month amplifies the impact of innovative and progressive initiatives made by each of the Network’s organisations, and allows for new ideas to be shared, discussed and implemented. The Network’s inaugural Pride Month event program features a fantastic range of online events, with Macquarie’s Developing and Delivering Indigenous Queer Studies event set to position our Indigenous Studies Department as a thought leader in the Higher Education sector.”
