Safe spaces at Macquarie

Macquarie University is committed to providing a respectful, safe and inclusive campus for everyone.

What is a safe space?

Safe spaces promote the safety of individuals and provide a space for people to be themselves without judgement and fosters an environment that does not tolerate discrimination, harassment, and bullying.

To be considered a safe space, work areas must comply with the following criteria:

  • Training: staff in this area have received some training about how to foster a safe and inclusive environment. Training includes the Safe Spaces workshop. It is also recommended that staff undertake Manawari Cultural Safety Training, Mental Health First Aid, Responding to Disclosures for Staff, LGBTQIA+ Awareness and Ally training.
  • Equity and inclusion in service agreement and/or policies: the way this work area defines how they do their work include equity and inclusion principles and practices.
  • Messages of inclusion: the space has visible messages of inclusion that demonstrate their commitment to equity and inclusion.
  • Point of contact while the space is open: the space has a point of contact available for individuals using the space, who can provide information about the support and reporting options available at MQ.

How do I register my work area as a safe space?

If you are interested in registering your work area and meet the criteria above please complete the Safe Space registration form.

The Student Equity, Diversity and Inclusion team will process your registration and send you the Safe Space sign and other information that you can use to promote your work area as a safe space on campus. They will also include your work area in the list of safe spaces on campus. For more information please contact the Student Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Team.
